Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo – The Hub of Technology Innovation

One of the biggest IT conferences and expos in the World took place on 3-7 November, 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. Over 5000 CIOs, IT industry experts and researchers joined in a massive discussion and celebration of state of modern IT.

CITIC Telecom CPC was there too with our team of experts and leaders, looking to both find new customers and knowledge about the ever-evolving world of ICT. Thus, we are happy to share some of the thoughts and news we picked up in Barcelona over the course of coming weeks.

For now, here are 6 trends, which were particularly interesting for us:

1. Evolving Role of CIO

CIO is finally a part of a business development discussion in most corporate. Many CIOs seem to even prefer the "business" aspect of work to fiddling with integration projects and hardware procurement. This also means that a successful CIO of the future might not have IT-background but come from a business function.

2. SD-WAN is Becoming Standard for Infrastructure Optimization

Even not everyone tried SD-WAN yet, but most of them know what it is and have an idea about SD-WAN deployment. However, many corporates are confused in vendor selections as there are not enough case studies, even though Gartner and other analysts have tried their best to compare, to support their decisions.

3. Vendor Lock-in Limitations

Corporates start worrying about vendor lock-ins, as it limits them especially for international deployments (goes for hardware, software and cloud). There are also other risks involved, as many cited changes in licensing policies and extras coming up with every renewal as a concern.

4. Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Machine Learning(ML) - A Well-Known Secret

Companies who started gathering data 3-4 years ago are really getting an edge in developing new services and most keep quiet about it. Those who are just starting on this journey are finding it quite tough finding data scientists. Professional service providers in the AI field are on the rise but have often limited experience for niche industries.

5. Exciting and Scary Emerging Markets

When corporates develop the emerging markets, CIOs are involved in exploring both IT-related items (MPLS, Cloud) but also legislation and certification, especially in data-protection area. It is no longer the case of “Yes, we can ship the server to that exotic location” but an ongoing task of being up to date on target markets both short-term and long-term.

6. The Rising Trend of De-centralization

De-centralization is back on the table and this means new rise for likes of edge computing and digital twin technologies. Logistics of IT can become something of a challenge, so organizations are now more open to hosting infrastructure hubs away from their central location.
