National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the National Energy Administration (NEA) have agreed to construct national computing hubs in 8 locations including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, the Greater Bay Area, the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Southwest China's Guizhou province, Northwest China's Gansu province and Ningxia Hui autonomous region; and 10 national data center clusters are in progress. The project, “Eastern Data and Western Computing”, was officially commenced.
Alongside the project, the state has also scheduled to set up national integrated network infrastructure. In the course of network construction, what should we pay attention to? How does “Eastern Data and Western Computing” contribute to the digital transformation of enterprises? And in what ways can cloud computing be further facilitated?
Literally, “Eastern Data and Western Computing” is not complicated, that is, “compute the data from the east in the west.” Unfortunately, the reality is immensely challenging. The first thing we need is a “highway” for quick dataflow through networks, and next, a platform for data integration and collection to gather, organize, classify and process heterogeneous data. This project set a higher standard for data computing, hence, promoting the intelligentization of the IDC industry, according to Mr. Adan Zhan, our Director of Data Science and Innovation.
A platform is essential to classify and categorize data for “Eastern Data and Western Computing”. When it comes to financial, healthcare and disaster alert applications that require low latency, the data should be stored in the east, and processed in proximity to their application scenarios. As for scenarios that have lower demand for latency, such as data storage, processing and deep learning, computing them in the west can considerably reduce the cost of data processing and enhance efficiency.
As the saying goes, “Food and fodder go before the troops and horses”, so a cloud platform that serves as a key pillar of data processing requires improvement when facing a thorough data classification and following the launch of “Eastern Data and Western Computing”. Moreover, applications in multi-cloud structures will greatly increase with the framework, resulting in a higher standard of data management in such diversified architecture.
In terms of network, “Eastern Data and Western Computing” makes multi-cloud indispensable for enterprises who migrate to cloud. IDC and cloud service providers have to explore together and realize a better interconnection of the business operations and between data centers since the network is not just a transmission channel. Instead, it is the cornerstone for cloud service providers to enhance competitiveness by combining network and cloud to provide quicker, more flexible responses to different business needs. Cloud-network convergence and collaboration are bound to take place based on the analysis of the overall development trend.
In face of “Eastern Data and Western Computing”, it is high time to figure out how to realize the interconnection between data centers in various locations, and enable seamless transfer and processing of cross-site data through cloud platform. “On the production side of the manufacturing industry, its requirement for data latency is stringent, and less so in energy consumption analysis, supply chain management, production management and so on. But the industry also has a higher standard for the construction of a multi-management system, since manufacturers often need to get through the data barriers between different systems for more extensive data interaction,” said Mr. Adan Zhan. In terms of service providers, transferring and processing data seamlessly are what they should work on. “Even though the data centers are scattered in 10 different clusters, we still need to make our customer experience as smooth as we can, and that’s the challenge of diversified management we faced,” he stressed.
However, we have already laid out our strategy for distributed management and even for building a platform dedicated to distributed data centers management.
