Big Data Era

The Telecommunications Industry has evolved through influences by both Technology and Commerce, each driving the other through the years.

We have come a long way since the invention of the telephone, in 1876, which made possible great achievements in long-distance communications and commerce, even impacting international relations and trade.

The pace of both technological and commercial progress further accelerated, with the invention of integrated circuits and microprocessors, which themselves became ever more sophisticated, smaller, and cheaper, year after year.

Now, both powerful computer processing and high-speed communications are ubiquitous. We have a massive number of devices able to compute and communicate. These are not only our smartphones, but also many embedded and autonomous devices. It seems we have only just entered the 4G era, and yet 5G is right around the corner.

In fact, a new era is dawning, empowered by advances in hardware, software, and commercial factors. Huge numbers of people are using huge numbers of devices, and high quantities of data are being generated and consumed. Just think of 4K or 8K video sizes, as well as numerous meta-data such as GPS location, biometrics, social network graphs, and others.

The proliferation of connectivity, users, devices, applications, data, storage and processing, all leads inevitably to the Big Data era.

Big Data For Big Impact

Big Data will be a major disruptive technology to business models and societal behaviors. We will all live a “digital life” in a “Smart City,” even more so than today when we already enjoy many things we now take for granted.

Many processes will also happen behind the scenes, without us being aware. For example, Netflix utilized viewer data and analytics to deliver great user experiences, and also produce the extremely popular House of Cards series.

Artificial Intelligence robots are being used by various mobile operators, restaurants, banks and even airports to handle customers, delivering services efficiently, and in native languages.

These are just a few examples of today’s applications, and many more exciting things are sure to come as we enter the Big Data era, all impacting various personal, business and social areas. The advent of the “Internet of Things” and more sophisticated cloud computing technologies will bring further richness to the ICT ecosystem.

So, let us all take the time to collaborate and really think about Big Ideas for Big Data, and make a Big Impact in this coming Big Era!
