In 2013 President of China officially declared to revive ancient Silk Road as “One Belt One Road” now Belt & Road Initiative, before the announcement China had already begun to invest heavily in the infrastructure to link up with Central Asia. The developments that OBOR has put special emphasis on utilizing Kazakhstan as an important hub given geographical advantage. For China, Kazakhstan is of immediate importance from various Industry perspective. In 2017 Kazakhstan also announce a 5 year program “Digital Kazakhstan” and it’s 4 Key areas.

  • Creating a “Digital Silk Road”. This is the development of the reliable, affordable, high-speed, secure digital infrastructure.
  • Creating a “creative society”. This is the development of competences and skills for the digital economy, the upgrading of digital literacy, training of ICT specialists for industries.
  • Digital transformation in the economy branches. It is the widespread introduction of digital technology to enhance the competitiveness of various branches of the economy.
  • Formation of “Proactive digital government”. This is the improvement of electronic and mobile government systems, optimization of the public services supply sphere.


While the Kazakhstan government has embraced the digital transformation and aiming to achieve the goal by 2020. It’s also very important for the Enterprises based out of Kazakhstan or have operation there to embark on the journey of Digital Transformation.The internet connectivity and IT infrastructure is essential to almost all business these days, even those located along what might have been the ancient Silk Road. With large amount of currency, data and information being transferred across borders, a secure and reliable telecommunications infrastructure is imperative for the Belt & Road (OBOR) project.
