AI applications have flourished in recent years, with enterprises beginning to explore various AI solutions to improve operational efficiency and customer experience, ensuring they remain competitive in their industry. DICT service provider CITIC Telecom CPC recently hosted the "AI is a Double-edged Sword" event, invited several innovative companies to share how they leverage AI to stand out in their fields. CITIC Telecom CPC and Palo Alto Networks security experts also discussed the potential security risks associated with AI, providing enlightened insights for delegates.

AI in Mission-Critical Applications: Enhancing Competitiveness Through Innovation

The Fireside Chat moderated by Henry Yeung, Product Marketing Director of CITIC Telecom CPC, began with a simple on-site survey which discovered that not many enterprises had adopted AI applications, possibly due to the busy nature of their business. The experiences shared by the three invited tech companies would provide valuable insights into effectively using AI to create unique business identities and superior customer experiences. Victor Wong, founder and CEO of UNCLE2, a luxury goods electronic pawn service, shared that traditional pawn services consume a lot of customer time for "price comparisons," resulting in many idle luxury items losing their financing potential. UNCLE2 utilizes AI to monitor the latest luxury goods prices globally, allowing customers to simply take a photo of their luxury item for the AI to automatically identify its model and condition. With this service, it can provide an instant, reasonable quote and pawn shop match, making transactions more convenient which helps to promote luxury goods trading.

Vito Ip, Founder and CEO of PreTech, highlighted their AI platform VisuSense which is based on video analysis. Utilizing the company's self-developed machine vision algorithms, it offers diverse AI solutions across various scenarios such as elderly care homes, shopping malls, and construction sites to provide security, patrol, real-time data analysis, and alert functions. By leveraging their AI edge computing box and powerful data processing capabilities, VisuSense can effectively handle large video data streams, reducing costs and enabling easy deployment.

Founder and CEO of the e-commerce platform Swapifly, Joseph Yuen, mentioned that their platform offers a free AI chatbot that automatically gathers relevant information from the Internet to answer customer inquiries. This reduces the workload of the customer service personnel. Although the service is free of charge, it trains the chatbot to better understand and respond to different products via vast amount of daily inquiries, making it a potentially valuable asset that could be sold to other platforms in the future.

Misuse of AI Increases Attack Potency: Intercept Intrusions with Comprehensive Data Analysis

Felix Cheng, Head of Systems Engineering, GBA at Palo Alto Networks, pointed out that hackers have utilized AI to enhance their cyberattack capabilities. For example, deepfake technology has been utilized to impersonate a C-level executive to scam subordinates, create more targeted and realistic phishing emails, or compose malware targeting newly disclosed vulnerabilities. These "innovative" AI applications shorten the intrusion time, from over a month to just a few hours. Without visibility into IT architecture and network traffic, it becomes difficult to defend against these attacks.

【New Cybersecurity Challenges】AI-Enabled Managed Security Services Respond Swiftly for AI-Enhanced Attacks Felix explained that security experts only need to install dedicated equipment on the customer’s network to collect and analyze data and use AI technology supported by SOC platform to detect suspicious activities.

He emphasized Zero-Trust framework is crucial to be deployed for counting ever-evolving cyberattacks. It must cover every aspect, including applications, endpoint devices, and network connections, enabling comprehensive monitoring of data activities to detect suspicious actions promptly and understand the causes of incidents from a macro perspective. Given the vast amount of data, manual analysis is inadequate which makes AI inevitable for processing. For example, Palo Alto Networks’ Cortex XSIAM, an AI-powered security operations center (SOC), has adopted AI to enhance security. By collecting vast amounts of valuable data, it can accurately predict changes in cyberattacks, identifying 1.5 million new types of attacks daily. It can assist enterprises in reducing false alarms and help analyze architectural weaknesses, significantly shortening the time required to remediate cyberattacks.

Outsourcing Security Services: Identify Security Blind Spots with Intelligent Analysis

Security Specialist of CITIC Telecom CPC, Dr. Sung Liu, emphasized that companies must keep up with the AI trend to face AI-enhanced cyberattacks as "speed is paramount" in preventing another breach. However, deploying AI is not as simple as installing software which requires professional design and monitoring by security experts, along with industry-specific data to train the AI. Since the budget is tight for some enterprises, Dr. Liu suggests seeking assistance from third-party Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs) for a more practical solution, leveraging their advanced technology and expertise.

【New Cybersecurity Challenges】AI-Enabled Managed Security Services Respond Swiftly for AI-Enhanced AttacksDr. Sung Liu explained that AI helps hackers significantly in collecting social engineering information, detecting vulnerabilities, writing malicious programs, and delivering malware, making traditional defense methods less effective.

Take TrustCSI™ MSS service as an example, he explained that it uses AI to support actions based on predefined rules and identify suspicious activities based on user behavior, login locations, etc., providing investigation reports according to urgency. Tasks that previously required extensive human resources, such as ”Red/Blue Cybersecurity Practices” and repetitive audits, can now be automated with AI, allowing security experts to focus on more critical tasks. With extensive experience in providing managed security services to various industries, CITIC Telecom CPC is knowledgeable in the security risks and response measures for different industries. It enables AI to formulate security policies and responses more swiftly and comprehensively than manual operations. This is particularly effective for larger enterprises with complex IT architectures or businesses spanning across regions and countries.

Guests and security experts also discussed data and privacy security issues brought about by AI, providing insightful perspectives for business leaders preparing to adopt AI.
