Cloud Transition Journey - 7 Commandments for Success

Cloud Strategy is one of the critical elements of an organization's IT Strategy. However, the Cloud migration journey can be a challenging task.  The challenges may come from the convincing management, technical requirements, cost, disruption in business operations or local regulations compliance etc.

Although there are challenges in migrating IT infrastructure to the cloud, there are still benefits such as cost saving, flexibility, accelerating digital transformation, appropriate data processing according to the laws such as GDPR, Russian Federal Law on Personal Data (No. 152-FZ) or China’s Cybersecurity law.

In the past, we have seen many CIOs saying, “We see the cloud as an opportunity, however, we still don’t have a cloud-specific strategy.” Now, with the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Cloud adoption has been accelerated and CIOs are compelled for Cloud adoption.

CIOs are now focusing on resilience, scalability and flexibility of IT infrastructure. IT Solution architects are now looking for more structural solutions while ensuring the number of technical debt is reduced during the Cloud adoption.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the pandemic has made businesses more dependent on cloud computing than ever—and companies are now racing to rein in the soaring costs. For instance, the spending on Cloud at Audi Business Innovation GmbH, a unit of Volkswagen AG-owned car maker Audi, has jumped 12% between March and April 2020. Their employees used remote computing power and software tools to work from home during the outbreak.

One of the largest multinational banking and financial services companies in Benelux said that they have experienced the acceleration in the digital business transformation way faster in last 5 months compared to the last 5 years, and are moving to Cloud completely.

1.      Legacy IT Systems

Most large enterprises have various applications and IT infrastructure. All these applications may be in different lifecycle stages, and their feasibility, integration and data format may also differ. Thus, the options of migrating to Cloud has become challenging.

By tailoring a migration plan, the challenges posed by legacy IT systems can be resolved.

2.      Cloud – Only, Not another Data Center

For any IT program to be successful, the design principles are always fundamental. Cloud migration is no exception. For any new application creation, the Cloud should be a standard. Cloud design utilizes new technologies (Scalable, Artificial intelligence, Pre-integration, etc.) to help enterprises stay ahead.

Migration to Cloud should be an extremely different approach in comparison to traditional in-house or outsourcing approach. The difficulty arises when enterprises start dealing with Cloud as another data center. Typically, enterprises face such hurdles during the large-scale Cloud deployments.

Enterprises need to adapt their operating models according to Cloud Management standards, which actually help on the effective IT processes, cost management and compliance. Enterprises must orient their teams for Cloud adoption and take it as a new way of working.

3.      There are No Shortcuts in Cloud Security

Having said that, the security for Cloud requires significant attention and effective approach.

4.      Data is Important

Previously, data was an outcome of automation tools in different formats. Now, data is extremely valuable as Cloud helps to structure, manage, derive or extract information. For enterprises, data-based analysis is the key to success. Hence, business technology framework must treat data as an important component in the core architecture and build a cloud journey accordingly.

Any new initiative during the initial phase is challenging, and Cloud transition is also the same. An enterprise needs orientation, engagement and convergence.
