Andy shared that HK Express has initiated approximately 60 innovative projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in the past 24 months. Nonetheless, the attack surface has witnessed a considerable expansion. Unfortunately, a few months ago, they experienced a cyberattack, leading to the blockade of the ticketing system and paralysis of the sales system which highlights both network security and innovation are equally important. As a result, HK Express is actively utilizing Machine Learning (ML) to automatically intercept potential threats and strengthen their defense capabilities.
Employing ML to enhance network security is prudent as agreed by Nick. Through the analysis of extensive data, ML can identify emerging attack methods, detect abnormal behavior, and effectively thwart potential threats accurately and swiftly. He gave examples of new trend such as phishing attacks utilizing QR codes and a decline in ransomware detection rates, both significantly elevating the risk of intrusions. Defending against cyberattacks becomes most formidable when enterprises are unaware of the enemy's presence and blind to their vulnerabilities. Cybersecurity may not be fully governed by relying solely on internal IT manpower which combining artificial intelligence with cybersecurity expertise is imperative for enterprises to fortify defense.
The surge in vulnerabilities is primarily attributed to inadequate network security strategies and IT infrastructure support for the extensive projects developed during digital transformation. Dave terms this phenomenon as "Digital Silos," impeding IT architecture and data visibility which makes it difficult to manage and identify vulnerabilities. He emphasizes the interdependence of a well-designed enterprise IT architecture, digital development, and network security strategy. This synergy enables enterprises not only to understand future development plans but also to diminish the attack surface and mitigate cybersecurity risk.
