There will be trillions of non-human users utilizing 5G for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The role of 5G is not merely about increased transmission speeds. 5G serves as the underlying “glue” for very diverse applications from different industries, including utility, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and much more. What is 5G+ for Smart Industries?

．Production optimization: 5G can help optimize processes by capturing and analyzing real-time data from inventory activities and production machines. Companies will gain much more visibility into production patterns and thereby maximize workflow by identifying the best sequences of factory activities, smoothing out production cycles and reducing waste.

．Higher safety: The broad range of available sensors for 5G, along with its near instantaneous response time, means better and faster equipment monitoring. This can create a considerably safer manufacturing environment, with fewer people needed on the factory floor and more responsive emergency shut-off signals.

．Preventive maintenance: the higher quantity and density of sensors across the factory environment can help with better preventive maintenance. It is because companies can more closely monitor the status of equipment to not only optimize maintenance schedules, but also predict and preempt problems, including through more convenient, faster and detailed remote diagnostics.

．Automatic replenishment: the entire 5G infrastructure ultimately translates into end-to-end supply chain integration, where factory tools with integrated 5G networking can automatically and rapidly replenish parts and supplies as needed, without human intervention, further reducing the inefficiencies and delays of the past.

Clearly, 5G will power the Smart Industries of the future. However, it is vital not to overlook the necessity of managing the huge volumes of structured and unstructured data generated by 5G connected devices. This information and network management will need to leverage the latest technologies to cope with the unprecedented traffic volumes, including utilizing network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), alongside high performance Cloud Computing, robust storage and Big Data analytics to optimize the network and enterprise management.
