ICT-MiiND and 5G+ Capabilities bring an abundant future to Smart Industries

ÜhendusedArukas innovatsioon

Ever since the first genuine mobile telephone call, 47 years ago, mobile technologies have been steadily evolving, with exponential increases in performance.

Mobile networks have transitioned from one generation to the next, until 5G now, and 6G upcoming.  Today, 5G capabilities are realized, and bring new value to Smart Industries.

“As an intelligent technology-driven digitalization enabler, our ICT-MiiND strategy combines decades of industry experience with the latest technologies—fueled AI, AR, Big Data, IoT, Blockchain and 5G enablement—to facilitate Smart Industries to automate IT operations and digitalize businesses,” said Daniel Kwong, CIIO of CITIC Telecom CPC.

5G – Creating New Value for an Augmented Intelligence (AI) Era

Experts anticipate 5G will go beyond intelligent communications to become a disruptive technology of the future, bringing faster speed, lower latency, more bandwidth, and edge computing capabilities. 5G will disrupt individual lifestyles, community model and current business approaches, in almost all areas of life and industrial sectors.

There will be trillions of non-human users utilizing 5G for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The role of 5G is not merely about increased transmission speeds. 5G serves as the underlying “glue” for very diverse applications from different industries, including utility, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and much more. Today, cross-industry initiatives are already happening around the world. From dream to reality!

What is 5G+ for Smart Industries?

Production optimization: 5G can help optimize processes by capturing and analyzing real-time data from inventory activities and production machines. Companies will gain much more visibility into production patterns and thereby maximize workflow by identifying the best sequences of factory activities, smoothing out production cycles and reducing waste.

Modularize factory: 5G’s density, speed, wide bandwidth and low latency help modularize the factory floor, where machines such as robots and other sophisticated tools can be reconfigured in real-time to improve efficiency. This is conducive to creating an environment for on demand mass customization and production.

Enhanced integration: 5G enables integration of factory infrastructure, operational technology and resources with enterprise IT systems. These linkages help business and operations managers keep better track of the big picture, as well as enable higher levels of optimization and even remote control of various manufacturing procedures.

Human-machine interface: aside from hardware and software, 5G can also empower “liveware,” through human-machine interfacing. With its high speed and high density, 5G can free company staff from workstations, and equip the workforce with mobile data and visualization tools, including portable tablets and wearable Augmented Reality equipment, to give staff a much higher and more productive degree of visual interaction with machines and products.

Higher safety: The broad range of available sensors for 5G, along with its near instantaneous response time, means better and faster equipment monitoring. This can create a considerably safer manufacturing environment, with fewer people needed on the factory floor and more responsive emergency shut-off signals.

Preventive maintenance: the higher quantity and density of sensors across the factory environment can help with better preventive maintenance. It is because companies can more closely monitor the status of equipment to not only optimize maintenance schedules, but also predict and preempt problems, including through more convenient, faster and detailed remote diagnostics.

Automatic replenishment: the entire 5G infrastructure ultimately translates into end-to-end supply chain integration, where factory tools with integrated 5G networking can automatically and rapidly replenish parts and supplies as needed, without human intervention, further reducing the inefficiencies and delays of the past.

Clearly, 5G will power the Smart Industries of the future. However, it is vital not to overlook the necessity of managing the huge volumes of structured and unstructured data generated by 5G connected devices. This information and network management will need to leverage the latest technologies to cope with the unprecedented traffic volumes, including utilizing network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), alongside high performance Cloud Computing, robust storage and Big Data analytics to optimize the network and enterprise management.
