Singapore's Marketing Talents: “Work-from-Home” Experience during Pandemic

To assure the safety and health of employees, CITIC Telecom CPC’s Singapore office has introduced the special work arrangements of working flexibility from home since the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we invited two marketing talents, June Tay and Winnie Yeo from Singapore office, to share their “Work-from-Home” experience.

Q1: How did the COVID-19 pandemic change your daily work life?

June: COVID-19 definitely changed the way we work. For example, organizations has increased their cloud resources and adoption for real-time visibility and the usage on collaboration tools. A deeper sense of change seems to have taken roots, there is a growing shift towards working from home.

Winnie: In Singapore, the government advised that employers to adopt telecommuting, staggering working hours and reducing close contact at work where feasible. In support of the government’s advice to reduce the risk of community spread, our company has begun a “work-from-home” arrangement for most employees.

Q2: Does “Work-from-Home” work for you?

June: YES! You cannot believe the amount of time I spend on commuting to office. Normally, I spend 1 hour on the road in the morning and another 1.5 hours home after work. Now I save time driving to and from the office. Can you imagine what I can achieve in this 2.5 hours?

“Work-from-Home” can boost my productivity. I can focus on what I need to do without being distracted. When I brainstorm for an eDM or an article, I can have the silence at home and slowly stew over my thoughts and words to form the best way to put forward my ideas.

Most importantly, the arrangement gives me more time to spend with my family. As a working mum, there is always a struggle between work and making more time for my kids. Saving extra hours can make a difference in our family.

Winnie: Being able to work from home during this difficult period is more ideal, especially during my third trimester of pregnancy. It allows me to have more rest time without squeezing into the morning crowd.

After working from home for two weeks, I was still able to achieve the same number of calls and appointments. I can contact customers and send email updates via company’s laptop VPN connection as usual, which is very convenient and efficient.

I do think that remote workers are more productive than on-site workers, if they can be more disciplined and manage their time efficiently.

Q3: What are the pitfalls of this special arrangement?

June: Lesser teamwork and interaction! Sometimes, when a far-fetched idea pops into your head, you need a sounding board. In the office, we usually walk up to other team heads and sound the idea with another person before execution. Working from home makes it difficult for you to discuss new ideas with colleagues. Of course, we can use messaging apps to achieve this, but the effect is different compared to a face-to-face conversation.

Winnie: The only downside is that I miss personal interaction with colleagues as I am alone at home all day. However, staying at home is definitely better and safer during this pandemic.

Q4: What is the best work arrangement?

June: Personally, I feel that the ideal arrangement is to spend a part of the week in the office and sometimes work from home in order to achieve the best arrangement. However, due to COVID-19, it is better to work from home for the time being.

Winnie: Becoming a mother makes me realize that having sufficient proper rest and diet, spending more time with family is very important. It would be ideal to work from home 2 days per week in future, so I can watch over my child’s growth and not miss any important milestones too.
