Conducting Business from Home amid COVID-19

Several large-scale events and conferences have been cancelled or postponed since the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was called off because of the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak making it impossible for the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications) to hold the event. To minimize the congregation and transmission of this human-to-human pathogen, the simplest business continuity plan is to conduct business from your home.

Mobile World Congress’s cancellation definitely affects all the mobile phones, gadgets and other tech businesses. However, business operation is not disrupted in today’s world connected by Internet, smart devices and smartphone. How can you ensure that your company is not left behind in this adversity? Have you implemented business continuity plan to minimize disruption to your operations?

According to CNN Business reported that “The world's biggest work-from-home experiment has been triggered by coronavirus”.  Across various regions like Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Italy, shops are shuttered, public facilities are closed, and there are few people wandering the usually bustling financial districts. Instead, millions of people are holed up in their apartments, in what may be the world's biggest work-from-home experiment.

By conducting your business from home during this period ensure that you and your staff remain productive, efficient and healthy during this difficult time. Working from home should be easier to implement for hyperconnected cities which have well-developed information communication infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud computing technologies and data centers.

Now, business leaders are looking to their IT departments to deliver a mobile workspace for staff to access corporate applications, data and services. A mobile workspace also requires collaboration and unified communications tools to ensure that staff can communicate effectively with their colleagues, customers and partners. With the danger of face-to-face meetings, video conferencing is becoming the new favorite of the communication tools. Many companies have opted to use phone, video conferencing and teleconferencing to communicate with colleagues, customers and partners. Have your company embarked on the journey of remote working?

Remote access systems may comprise of several layers, physical servers or hardware appliances, administrative software and end-user software clients. Other than the servers and software, network connectivity, server-to-server connections, cybersecurity, cloud connectivity, on-premises and cloud-based machines as well as data backup. They must all play nicely together in order to ensure that remote working is possible. A significant investment of time and effort may be needed to deploy and manage the system. The systems must be maintained and administrated, someone must handle troubleshooting and connectivity issues, patches, updates and other ongoing maintenance tasks. Can your IT department cope with the rigorous demand?

The most important thing to safeguard your company is to choose a remote access solution that adopts IPsec or SSL encryption standards which provide tamperproof protection for information transmitted over the Internet. In addition, your company must have absolute control of the access right of the users, maximizing the privacy and data confidentiality. A fully managed service will help to ensure that the systems are maintained and administrated by your service provider. Ensuring that your service provider has the knowledge and capability to provide the necessary linkage between different types of network connectivity, on-premises or cloud-based machines, information security and unified cloud data centers.
